British Association for Sexual and Relationship Therapy

Objectives

the provision of, and assisting in the provision of training for those engaged in sexual, couple and relationship therapy

formulating and monitoring standards of professional conduct and competence for those engaged in sexual, couple and relationship therapy

promoting research in the fields of marriage and other intimate relationships; sexual, couple and relationship therapy and human sexuality

To promote the education and training of clinicians and therapists working in the fields of sexual and couple relationships, sexual dysfunction and sexual health

Activities

BASRT actively promotes sexual and relationship therapy and helps maintain professional standards. The Association:

approves training courses
BASRT approves a limited number of training courses which lead to recognised professional qualifications in sexual and relationship therapy. We can supply a list of these courses.

accredits practitioners
The Association accredits practitioners who meet its criteria of knowledge, experience, ethical standards and clinical and therapeutic skills.

recognises supervisors
BASRT awards formal recognition to supervisors who meet its criteria.

advises
Members of the Association serve on several advisory boards to the pharmaceutical industry, and advise on national training programmes for GPs and other clinicians in the management of sexual disorders.

conferences
Each year the Association organises continued professional development events for members through national conferences as well as regional conferences and workshops covering a wide variety of topics on sexuality and sexual relationships.  Conferences are open to non-members.

publications
The Association produces an international learned journal in partnership with Taylor & Francis, professional and academic publishers. The quarterly journal is free to members and includes the latest research in the field from practitioners worldwide.

public relations
Information on sexual problems and lists of therapist are available to the public on the internet and from our information department.  For a small fee, members of the public can join BASRT’s mailing list for regular updates on the Association’s activities.

BASRT welcomes new members.

The Association has several categories of membership, with varying levels of subscription depending on member recognition, participation and interest. New categories are being developed. Current categories are:

BASRT was established in 1976 and has expanded to include members with wide-ranging professional experience in medicine, psychology, nursing, social work, counselling and psychotherapy. The Association maintains links with related professional organisations and is a member of the UK Council for Psychotherapy. Suitably qualified BASRT members are eligible to be included in the UKCP Register.
